Checklist Acronyms

In August 2014, 15 years after retiring as an airline pilot, I decided to do a little flying. I went out to the airport and checked out in a Cessna 172. Much to my dismay, I found that I had forgotten the checklist acronyms I used to use when flying light aircraft. An Internet search turned them up, but on different websites. So, here in one place, are the ones I was looking for.

• CIGARS
  • Controls — free and correct
  • Instruments — working and set
  • Gas — sufficient for flight, correct tank(s) selected
  • Attitude — pitch, rudder, and aileron trim set
  • Runup — check mags, carb heat, prop, vacuum, alternator charging
  • Safety — seat belts, doors/canopy closed
• GUMP
  • Gas — select proper tank
  • Undercarriage — gear down
  • Mixture — full rich or leaned for field altitude
  • Propeller — forward to fine pitch
• GUMPCC
  • Gas — select proper tank
  • Undercarriage — gear down
  • Mixture — full rich or leaned for field altitude
  • Propeller — full fine pitch
  • Carb heat — on
  • Cowl flaps — open
