Checklist Acronyms
In August 2014, 15 years after retiring as an airline pilot, I decided to do a little flying. I went out to the airport and checked out in a Cessna 172. Much to my dismay, I found that I had forgotten the checklist acronyms I used to use when flying light aircraft. An Internet search turned them up, but on different websites. So, here in one place, are the ones I was looking for.
- CIGARS
- Controls — free and correct
- Instruments — working and set
- Gas — sufficient for flight, correct tank(s) selected
- Attitude — pitch, rudder, and aileron trim set
- Runup — check mags, carb heat, prop, vacuum, alternator charging
- Safety — seat belts, doors/canopy closed
- GUMP
- Gas — select proper tank
- Undercarriage — gear down
- Mixture — full rich or leaned for field altitude
- Propeller — forward to fine pitch
- GUMPCC
- Gas — select proper tank
- Undercarriage — gear down
- Mixture — full rich or leaned for field altitude
- Propeller — full fine pitch
- Carb heat — on
- Cowl flaps — open
