Bombay, Tuesday, 1995-11-07(1) 10:45 local (Z+5.5)

Let's see, first we had a 05:15 wakeup call for a 06:15 departure from the hotel. That got changed to 09:00 for 10:00, that got changed to 09:45 for 10:45, that got changed to 10:00 for 11:00, that got changed to 10:40 for 11:40. The final change didn't reach me in time to keep me from going to the lobby ready to go for what had been the previous call. Oh, well, I paid my bill and came back to the room. The cause of all this is that they took the airplane we were supposed to take and sent it to Jeddah, replacing the airplane that was coming in from Frankfurt, but eight hours late. So, Jeddah went out relatively on time. We'll be going out about six hours late—if we get out at all.

The airplane we're getting has a bad engine. It's only a matter of time until it craps out. its gear box is going to hell. They're trying to nurse it along either until the 17th, when the contract drops to one airplane, or until they can get in a replacement for it. The gear box is critical to starting, so when it does fail, it will probably be during the start. However, there is always the small chance that it will fail after start, and the most stressful part overall and the highest temperatures of an engine's operating envelope is during takeoff. We'll be paying attention on the takeoff roll. I guarantee it. Airline's do things in India they would never do in the U.S.

C.J., if you think of it, one of these mornings pick up my internet e-mail. It's probably piled up pretty good. When you first get up is the best time to do it. After noon the Eugene Free Net gets pretty loaded and logging on is a problem. The steps to accomplish the pick up are:

1. get into Windows

2. press the Windows key (to the right of the space bar with the Windows logo on it), that'll bring up the task manager

3. press F8, that'll bring up Trumpet Winsock

4. click the DIALLER menu item on the top bar

5. click the LOGON item on the menu that dropped down

6. wait until it calls and logs on. At the end of the logon you'll start seeing some gibberish

7. press the Windows key again, you'll see the task manager again

8. press F9, that'll bring up Eudora

9. click the FILE menu item on the top bar

10. click the CHECK MAIL item on the menu that dropped down

11. when it's finished, press the Windows key again to get the task manager

12. in the task manager window, double click Trumpet Winsock to get it in front of Eudora

13. click the DIALLER menu item on the top bar

14. click the BYE menu item on the menu that dropped down

15. at this point it's all over. You can dismiss Trumpet Winsock and then Eudora and then Windows by double clicking on the bar in the upper left corner of each window on the screen, or you can just forget all that and turn the machine off.

Who says Windows is easier than DOS. In DOS I used to do this with two key presses, a letter to say which batch file to use and the Enter key. Sometimes progress is not progress in all ways. Actually, what I need to do is find the time to write a script file for Trumpet Winsock and another for Eudora. That would cut down considerably on the effort requried. These two pieces of software, of course, have totally different scripting systems. What I need to do is to bring the world to a halt while I catch up. Sound familiar in your life?
